Elgin 120 - Even tougher than ever!
The toughest bike race in Atlantic Canada just got tougher - 40 kilometres tougher to be exact.
Forty more kilometres of 900-foot ascents. Forty more kilometres of racing down the mountain at breakneck speeds. Forty more kilometres of gruelling fire roads and double track.
And Shawn Hamilton can't wait to start.
The mountain biker out of the Marysville Bike Club is one of many two-wheeled mountaineers competing in the eighth annual Tour of Elgin held on the treacherous mountain near the town of Elgin, 10 kilometres north of Fundy National Park.
Hamilton, who has raced in the renowned Elgin 80, and his MBC counterparts were searching for the next step up and spoke to the event organizers about a possible 120K race for Saturday's event.
The bid was successful and the most difficult race in eastern Canada just got that much harder.
"They've taken it to the next level to see if our fitness is actually what we think it is," Hamilton said, speaking for bikers from across Atlantic Canada.
