Automotive Mechanics

Hello everyone, I was wondering if there are any mechanics on here.  Basically I was wondering what it's like working as a mechanic here in Nova Scotia.  I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with my life and going to school to be a mechanic is one of the things I'm very interested in.   Just trying to get a basic idea of your good/bad experiences.

i typed up a response the other day and then for some reason it never got posted, my fault i am sure. anyway after doing this for over 20 years i might in hind sight not have chosen this course for my lifes journey. having said that right now is not a bad time to enter a trades profession as there seems to be a demand for skilled labor. as well many of the local dealers have recently built new buildings so the chances are good that you can get a job in one of the newer shops. hours can be long most every one is open on saturday and a lot are also open nights, the job is psyhicially demanding working in the winter sucks as everything drips down on you as it melts, ummm tasty roadsalt. you need good motor skills, you will get dirty, you need to be organized and able to problem solve. starting out you will do a lot of rependative jobs think oil changes and tires day after day. still for a trade it's not that bad you could be dealing with other peoples shit literally or working outside in shitty weather.  anyway hope this helps.

the point he didn't touch on is you'll make $10-12 after you finish school and are working on your ticket and you'll be a tire changer and oil man/woman.

if you want a decent trade get in to electrical, or one of the technologies....Radio technology(trains you to be a radiologist) seems pretty good deal too!

it all depends on what you put into it. if you go in with a know it all attitude you will be doing oil changes and break jobs for a long time.

i am not a mechanic, i do a lot of work myself, (build 4x4 trucks, i have a modded 07 gsxr 750, just sold a boosted jdm silvia) about a year ago i was in your same situation, a good friend of mine has been in the trade for 4 years now so i asked him.

he told me that he went into his work placement and put in the hours, came in a hour early, and stayed late. he was fully licensed twice as fast as everyone else in his class. when they gave him a job at the end of the year he asked to learn everything, he was trained to rebuild trannies, motors, rear-ends, and everything else in like 3 years. last year he decided to join the military, because he was already trained he got a big signing bonus.

it helps to if you go to school in the city, you will get better work placements.  if you can work fast you will make a lot of money because they pay so much money for a x number hour job, if you get it done 2 hours early you can start the next job.

i went to nscc a couple years back, i knew everyone in the automotive class, and because it was in bridgewater only 2 of them had jobs at the end of the year.
