Czech guy going to Dal, looking for a group of road riders.

Hi,
My name is Jakub, from the Czech Republic. I am dying to start riding my road bike here in Novia Scotia. I would like to find a group of riders to ride with.

Could you te

ll me when the rides are? and What do I have to do to join the rides?

Thank you very much.
Jakub

Cau Jakube,

The easiest way to get on some group rides is to join a club or two. Try Bicycles Plus and/or Cyclesmith, unless you want to do ultra endurance type of stuff, then try Nova Scotia Randonneurs. Both Bicycles Plus and Cyclesmith have official group rides on Saturday mornings. Plus, riders usually get together during the rest of the week. Bikes Plus especially has an active forum for posting rides. If you have a race license then it'd be $10.00 to join, otherwise it's $35.00. Drop by which ever shop. Bikes Plus is in Bedford and Cyclesmith is on Quinpool in Halifax, (but Cyclesmith Saturday rides depart from Darthmouth). It's easy to ride out to either location.

Both clubs are great, though they offer slightly different atmospheres. BP is probably the larger club - their Saturday rides attract upwards of 50 riders in the high of the season, who divide based on ability into smaller groups. CS is the smaller club, but they have all the big shoots around here - I mean fast riders. Though, the fast guys usually don't go to the official club rides, so their Saturday ride might only have handful of riders.

Ahoj Zuzko,
Thank you very much for your reply, it is very helpful. I am going to join the cyclesmith club. :)

Are you Czech? I am actually also looking for a Czech community living in Halifax, are there any Czechs living in Halifax who may go for a beer at the weekends or something like that?

Thank you again for your help.

Have a good Weekend

Jakub,

Nice that you picked a club, with being at Dal, Cyclesmith is definitely the more convenient shop to belong to.

Yes, I’m Czech, at least originally. As for other Czech people around here, I know of them but have never actually met them. There is a small group called Czechs in HRM on facebook. By the way, most Canadians, especially students, will want to go have beers on the weekends too;) Not sure if you are totally new to Canada or if you’ve been here before. Welcome either way.

jakub,

Glad to see another rider join the community. As for group rides, cycloco put it best. Im not aware of your ability level but BP has various fitness levels on their rides, while Cyclesmith rides tend to have a smaller more diverse ability level. If your looking to ride with the heavy hitters, probably have to wait another month or 2 before you see anything organized. Being the end of the race season, most of us stash our road bikes away and grab out lights and mtb bikes to get in our evening rides. Once october/november rolls around you'll start seeing posts on here for our WBL (winter bike league) rides, which roll through every sunday till spring. WBL rides range from 90-150k (weather dependent) and welcome anyone from weekend warrior to hrm's finest. avg speed usually 33-36km/hr. hope you brought some warm clothing.

Hi Jon,
Thank you for your reply and for the info. I will be looking for and looking forward to the WBL rides.

Do you know, if there are any rides organized during the week? Meaning business days?

Thanks,
Jakub

Hey Zuzko,
Thanks for your help and hope to see you on some rides.

Jakub

Jakub

there aren't any official rides during the week that I'm aware of this time of year

the bicycles plus crew seem to have a few members that have a more flexible schedule and they will do rides mid day or afternoons even beer rides.

not sure if it is too much of a hassle to get out to Bedford since that's where most of their rides start and end but there is a steady stream of day time rides posted there

if you have your class schedule sorted you could always post a ride here with time and distance and approximate average speed I'm sure people would be willing to join and show you the local favorite loops in the Halifax area
