I miss the old ecmtb as well. The community was divided and conquered, and plus facebook dominates most leisure net time for a lot of people. I've heard "well all my friends are on facebook, and I just plan my rides that way" from a few people who don't have a PT or CE name now.
the dreaded where are they now post

Dratted facebook. I figured as much. Life is change - do miss the hijinks around these parts though. Thks

ecmtb was fun. I too miss the good old days.
seemed to me that folks just did not like the change. there was a lot of confusion in the early days of the cog and so folks just seemed to move on rather than wait for the new site to envolve. i hope to god that i the end it does not come down to having to go thru facebook in order to comuniciate i have not got an account yet and don't plan on getting one anytime soon.
I agree things were a bit rocky in the early beginnings here and i think allot of people got frustrated and left.
people seem to be posting rides on facebook more than say the groups here or even the general Forum
seems there is more hype around the events and races than cycling in general lately
I;m thinking this Fall we bring out Friday night lights?? ideally get 3 groups out of people out so we can cover all skill levels
I'll start a group or a Forum thread if there is enough interest ?
I think when we did the changeover, it was so broken that it scared a lot of people off. I like to think that it's in way better shape now, but in the meantime, everyone has taken to facebook it seems.
I'd like to be able to offer more tools that more people would use. I see a lot of people on here often, but not a lot of posting. I don't know why, though...
Post your head off, invite a friend, PM me and tell me if something can be better.
Woot for conversation.
The BMX / Urban crew was more or less completely lost, but they were on their way out with ECMTB anyway having made a few of their own sites.
I've said it a few times all ready, but the people who think this site is dead aren't looking hard enough. Maybe half of the sites traffic (don't have access to stats anymore to say for sure) is in the groups section. Some groups are more active than others, but the ones I follow are thriving. That is where the rides are being planned etc.
There has been a down turn in silly threads, but a huge spike in informative threads. Many of our new users seriously know their stuff and there isn't a question that involves a bike that won't be thoroughly answered if it's posted.
Things are different sure. But I kind of like the new mature and concise atmosphere.
I will add that there seem to be many people who wanted Cogeyed to fail regardless of how useful or amazing the new site was. They wanted to keep the tattered old ECMTB regardless of the fact that it was falling apart and was way beyond repair. It didn't matter how often you tell them, it just wouldn't sink in that the site was going to die.
And to boot, the people you're asking about weren't even on ECMTB much anymore. Priorities change.
I still pop in from time to time, however I have to admit that my heart just isn't in the Forums anymore. Even on PedalTrout I don't post nearly as much as I used to at ECMTB, but when I do it's usually in the form of a Blog.
I don't think this site is dying, but I do think that as we all get older we do have different priorities, as Andrew said. I don't see Cogeyed and PedalTrout as two different communities; they're more like two different ways of serving the same community. I've always said that when I created PedalTrout my focus was less on the Forum (although there is one on the site) and more on providing information and offering a service to the cycling community at large. ECMTB was very much a Forum-oriented site and I think that's still a big part of Cogeyed as well. I think that both sites have more-or-less the same audience with the exception of a few folks here and there. I don't see a community divided, I see a community with options.
That's a good thing, no?
Good comments all - and less shenanigans and more maturity ain't a bad thing most days. So groups, pedaltrout, facebook and growing up - that about cover it? I'll look into the group thing. Mature and concise - yup that's what we want out of our surfing experience - yup, no damnable frivolity, satire or e-thuggery. Ain't got time granny - just the facts man. Oh well to each his own. Hope everyones riding season is ripping.

You do realize that virtually everything on this site is user generated right? The content is directly related to the users. If you want a different flavor then get to work. It seems the only people complaining are the ones who show up every other month, poke their head in and don't see anything that's up their alley. How do you expect user generated content to be right for you if you aren't contributing to the cause?
NB, we do love your contributions. They've always been amazing. One of the things about cogeyed that people don't realize is exactly what Andrew mentioned. It's all user generated content. We're not as active in doing bike reviews, hosting events or the like. Conversely, this platform allows us to easily post ads for events and collect real stats about them. It allows people to post new trails and rides (albeit the screens lack a lot presently).
Some users (and you should be promoted to one) have the ability to write their own blog posts which show on the home page.
Videos as well. This is a tip for all:
If you want to embed videos, use the embed code from youtube, and choose the embeddable input format from the input format list below. It doesn't read super well for now, but I sometimes fix posts just cause I prefer that the content be embedded. There are some fixes around for some of the bits we're using but I haven't had time to incorporate things.
Another thing is this is all built on a framework. One account, many things to do. It's all tied together - so if there's something you can think of that we can add or do with this data, we'd be happy to look at it for you.
I hired a designer for 10 hours to come in and do some work. He has some cleaning up to do still, but visually, the site is looking pretty nice I think.
For site hosted videos, we can also allow uploads of videos under 200mb presently. You can upload a few file formats and share video right on the site. Ideal for shorter clips. Soon, if it gets used - I can upgrade the service to allow bigger clips, too.
So - there it is . I'd love to hear ideas. I know we're not facebook and never will be. They've kind of got a niche and 100s of developers. I've built this essentially as a one man show with a little help and direction here and there from people. It's awesome to have some conversation around community and content.
That being said, I'd LOVE to have a column or two submitted by people. Race coverage which could be posted outside the forums (linked to from there, but part of the core site), people news, product information and the like. I am starting to try and get more involved with the business side of things as the summer winds down and build up some more interesting things for the coming season...
werd up.
I come on this site from time to time, I dont know why I dont post info like I used to because none of my interests have changed.
I can tell you one thing, id pay a few bucks to read that war on terror thread again. lol.
I've been re-reading my last post. Boy it sounds like some really grumpy asshole wrote that. This happens all of the time to me - I fack up the tone - far more tongue in cheek intended - not there on second viewing. And 09Man and Nimz - I get the user content thing - I think I said as much in my original post. And I will check into the groups - seems to be where the natural evolution of action as moved. I guess that was why I asked, the where are they now, question - I liked or was interested in those and other users content. But mea culpa - I get it. Use it or lose it, be part of the solution not the problem. New threads coming up - and if the writing bug hits I'll submit for your perusal. Site does look great by the way - and I'm with Skull - do not and will never have a facebook account - freaks me out.

Ever have a fave cult tv show that the studio execs had it in for so they moved it around on the schedule? So much so that it ended up losing audience share and eventually settled into some shit timeslot like 9pm on a friday night? Same thing. Too many re-boots and lost content, plus Facebook means I only have to deal with people I actually like. Spouting all of the advantages of this vs that reminds me of the beta vs vhs days.
That, and I've run out of things to say.
That's why you don't see me around this New Coke version very much.
And here's the kicker: I've ridden my mtb as many times as there have been races this year (yes, I know about the roadie room) so I can count my mtb rides on one hand. road though has taken ahold and won't let go...

Apparently the web is dead and/or dying.
I haven't been on Cogeyed since leaving Halifax at the end of Spring. I'm in Ottawa, and there scene is fragmented here as well. Though the riding is great: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/48778958?sms_ss=email (5 flats and a walk out though), BMX flatland contest this past weekend (how rare is that?) and two BMX tracks, and chairlift hill allin 15 minutes.
Over & Out.
I like Ottawa, and chili.
i pop on now and then, but like everyone else said, with lack of posts there's not much to post to.
i know, lets stir things up

I agree....since "cogs" inception I myself have not looked in more than a couple of times due to the new layout ect, no Facebook for me either Skull, I guess we are a couple of anti social-ites.....I like it that way.
been in the woods doing the same old
Ran in to Muddy on trail a couple of months ago. He was the King of Inuendo, as I recall.
Hoping that the work we're constantly doing on the cog will help people want to come back and chat bikes. We're trying to get more news, local news, videos and product reviews.
Would LOVE for some writer types to step it up!
Like the new footer? Niiiice.

So I still lurk around here was every little while. Check on you crazy roadies - so fast and full of funny lingo - the gangst stuff makes me giggle. And I don't mean to sound negative - but the place seems a little, well, er, um, on the dead side. There I said it. And maybe I'm missing something so call me out. And I am prepared for the obvious - hey lurker, a little ironic for a lurker to be stating its dead around here - guilty. But in the hopes of spinning things up - where the hell are all of the old ECMTB.com'ers at? Goat, Jeffro, Bikergrl, Skull, that Muslim dude, Sketchy, you know the ones I'm missing. Where they be? Oh, and I need a 4" fork for less then 200 bucks that is better then the X-vert I have on there now - poor thing. nb
