My Season is Now done,

So, Last wednesday night i was just kind of hanging around with my buddys in a parking lot, I had my bmx with me, i thought i would just be hanging out so stupid me did not bring my helmet, so i was going pretty fast across the parkibg lot coming from the store and i went to hop over a curb, my back tire caught the curb, sending my over my bars, head first into the pavement, i was knocked out on impact,no external womb, my friend picked me up and brought me back around, i sat there for a bit, then he drove me home, me not thinking anything of it, i tried to go to sleep, my head was throbbing with pain, so i askd my mother to take me to the hospital, she rushed me in to emergency at Dartmouth General, they checked me out, i had internal bleeding in my brain, i then was ambulanced to the QE2 for emergency brain surgery, the surgery took 3 hours, they said if i got to the hospital 20 mis later i would have been dead, i was then in the hospital for 5 days after, just getting out yesterday, so now i cannot ride until next season, I now have 42 staples in my head and a big cut going from ear, up over my head, to the other ear.

So my basic message to everyone, wear your helmet, whenever your on your bike, even if your just riding around, i almost lost my life because of not wearing one,

HOLY SH***T!!!

Glad you're okay! Man... scary stuff. I hope the recovery is swift and painless.

Thanks for posting this. A very good lesson for all of us, whenever we think "I don't need my helmet, I'm just going to the store (or whatever)." Hope you make a full recovery.

Cody,

Firstly, please accept my heartfelt wishes for a speedy and full recovery.

Secondly, as with previous posts, please know that sharing your story with others is so very important to preventing these incidences from occurring more often. You are truly a hero by thinking of others at such a traumatic time!

Something to think about when you're feeling better is to possibly become involved with ThinkFirst or some such program. I've done a considerable amount of bicycle helmet research and have had the opportunity to work with some ThinkFirst folks along the way. It's folks such as yourself that share their stories with the ThinkFirst programs that have the largest impact in helping other young folks make the right decision and prevent traumatic incidences from happening.

Again, thank you for thinking of others and turning a terrible occurrence into something that is positive!

Take care.

Sorry for your accident. Glad you're OK and will be back in action next year!

As well as a helmet, everyone should consider other gear, too. Gloves at a minimum to protect your palms in case of a crash.

I now wear shin pads on most of my trail rides. Maybe overkill, but I'm tired of having scratched up legs from trailside brush, and pedal strikes to the shin.

On rides where I'm expecting a little more action, I may throw arm pads on, too. Pads turn most crashes into complete non-events.

At my age, I don't heal that quickly, and I really don't want a crash to take me out of riding for very long.
