Questions on how to race in NS

I've had some people recently asking me about racing and or ride days in NS.  Not just DH either.  Road and xc aswell.  Now, I kind of understand it that for DH you need a generial membership, in order to even buy a day licence.  Then you need to pay for the race entry fee, and a number plate, bringing it to about $75 for someone to just try the sport.  Do you also need all of this for a road or xc race?  Or can they just show up and buy a day licence, plate and entry fee like years past? If not, this makes it hard to promote out sport. And if you can just do that for road and xc, then why is DH different?   I'm not bringing up old shit, but just curriuos so I know what to tell these people.  I couldnt find anywheres on the BNS site that cleared any of this up for me.  Plus I tried to become a member of the fourm, but didnt know what a VIP code was, so couldnt join anyhow.  Again, no shit stiring, just want some clear answers.

Chris, just read through any of the DH threads and you'll find this stuff.  It's been beaten nearly to death, CPR'd, and shot between the eyes in here.

A general membership is for DH club ride days--club events, not races.  Shit can't be timed.   Just like a club road ride requires.

Races for road/xc/and dh are all the same, in that they require either a BNS yearly race license or one-day membership, plus the entry fee and perhaps $5 for a plate.

Your understanding isn't correct. A quick summary:

  • First, pricing is more or less standard whether or not you're road, XC, DH or what.  If you're more than one you can get combined memberships for just a couple extra dollars.

  • If you want to race you need a race license which is ~$100 for adults and considerably less for minors.  The alternative is the one event membership that runs you $20 in addition to the race fee.

  • If you just want to participate in club events like group rides for XC, touring for road or ride days for DH, then all you require is a general membership which is $25 plus any overhead the club you join charges.  (To the best of my knowledge, no clubs charge more than $5 overhead.)

  • Note that a general membership will not entitle you to race.

If you're concerned about promotions etc., I strongly encourage you to become involved in some capacity as all aspects of BNS require assistance, especially the downhill scene.

Most of the relevant information you're looking for on the BNS site is here.  Some confusion in the DH scene surrounds the ride days whereby the community think a ride day is a special entity when in fact it's just a club event; that should clear most things up.

Thanks Jamie, Thats all I was looking for.    Didnt really have time to read threw all the BS in the other threads, and was looking to hear an answer from someone who would actually know, and not just another joe blow rider, who might know the answer.

Gotta bring this back up. What EXACTLY do I need to race some DH this yr? I remember showing up at wentowrth 2010 and being turned away when I thought I had what was needed.

pray to the dh god's, a sacrifice of a goat might help. (lol) to be honest, i don't know.

besides your gear, you need a license. I don't think you can race DH with a day license. Contact BNS and get yours before it's too late.

There's probably a form on bicycle nova scotia's website somewhere but I can't seem to find it. http://www.bicycle.ns.ca/racing.html

Go there to get a license online. Quick and easy.

And the liscence covers you for ride days as well, correct?

yep. that's how they did it last season.

Just FYI, I online registered for a BNS Liscense on Sunday past and recieved an email with a temp one today, thats a 6 day turn around, not bad. Wicked improvement from last year.
