I had one of these carbon Trek's last season and the BB lasted up super well, it's a super easy system to work with, the bearings just press in. When the bearings wear out, they'll develop a bit of play and then you can just replace them, at probably the same price as any other BB. Overall it would be a killer bike, hope you go with it.

The bb setup is really trick. No tools needed for installation/removal, stiff and light. It is only 21 dollars for a replacement too. They wear out a little faster (races like Conquer the Pass will do a number on it) but I'd still say it is a nice upgrade. For the extra 800 dollars I'd go with the 9.7, much nicer frame and if you ever break it Trek is stellar to deal with.
If I were you Chris I would see if you could find a deal on last years 9.8. Full XT and a nicer fork with handlebar lockout (you can lock it out on short singletrack power climbs). Unless you have old parts kicking around it'd be worth it in my mind.

hummmm, good points there Martin. I'll look into it once the shops open again.

Ok, so I am looking at getting a Trek 8000 next month. But, was thinking that I wont be able to really ride it untill april. So Why not save a few extra bucks up, and go for the 9.7. My only concer doing so, is the type of bb in the 9.7. It has the drop in bearings instead of a thread in cup or cartrage. I am wondering if anyone has any experance with this type of bb for NS riding? Will it hold out aslong as a standard bb?
