warm and fuzzy? is that what you call the sensation you get when you start bonking in the middle of a ride on a beautiful sunny day? or the feeling you get when you realized that you ran out of water, and your not close to finishing your ride.
being a bastard
so today i went out on a little roadtrip to debert and did a second ride on the micmac community trail and then some exploring on a small portion of the surrounding trails and i got to tell you it is some of the best single track in the province. deputies jim and rick as associate bastards were involved and up to their usual tricks and we all had a great ride. this is a fantastic trail system and you need to go and do it yourselves. just remember less talking and more riding.
i think the warm and fuzzy skull is reefer-ing to is from all "breathers" that he, jim and rick take :D
one of the pitfalls of an antisocial ride is that when your rear swingarm breaks you got no one to share your pain with. unless you happen to run into a fellow member of our little group on your walk of shame. thanks for the assist lola hope your ride was better than mine.
Hard luck Skull... what goes around comes around, you`ll have a great ride next time!
actually i went back to the scene of the crime tonight and came across the clear cut in all its diesel fueled glory just feet from the trail. not much better of a night.
Damn.
hey sean which bike did you break? hopefully not the satan curse.
yeah it was my santa cruz. now i gets to wait and see what the good folks at the company are going to do for me.
this is almost like an antisocial blog or some such thing but whatever. had the joy of getting out for a ride between the rain drops the other day. starting to use part of the old powerline trail across from shubie by getting on the dirt road beside dartmouth crossing. footnote in all the years we road that powerline we always climbed straight up and i never even knew that road was even there. regardless this provides a great break from the gravel path routine down on the lake charles extension. as you all must be aware by now there is clear cutting being done in the spider lake area. as of yesterday they have still not crossed the four wheelr road but are very close to it in several spots. if you enjoy the trails up there you may want to get out and do your own anti social ride of the lower sections on the left side of the ridge before something unpleasant happens to them.
Just got back from a ride through DTown Darkside to Shubie, Spider, every trail and back home. Legs are jellloooo...
They're just below the grassy knoll. It's scary and daunting. Kind of sucks that HRM hasn't allowed any real venue or voice for us to speak out and get some properly designated trails.
Rode alone. No music. Wind was perfect. At different speeds, I could hear different windy sounds and horns. Very rad.
after getting back to reality (hrm) it's going to be hard to force myself to ride and pedal while riding. kinda got spoiled by two days of lift access kick ass trails at sugarloaf. i might have to break out the s\s and do the hali-dart-spider super rip and release the dragon. i wonder of i can knock off the loop in under 2 hours. aprox. 30-40 kms
so there i was in hillsbourgh slogging up the hill thru the mud with a bunch of other racers on the course. and yet i find myself out on there all by myself for the longest time. even when i caught up with others it was just to ask for a way by and away you go off by yourself again. i had not raced in some time now and forgot about just how unsocial it can be at times out on the course. at times it can be a very lonely feeling and you begin to wonder just were the hell evryone got too. it can be so vastly different then the social scene back at the pits as folks drift around laughing and chatting.
how did you do sean? what bike?
since the heckler was broken it was down to a choice of one, which was the can on ale. threw on a set of bar ends and it was the perfect weapon, not. as far as myself well i was in no hurry but feeling ok till i got some severve cramps in both legs on the end of lap three. well that was end of the day for me i never cramped up that bad before it's like i got deep bruise it's still sore today. i limped back to the pits and and spent the rest of the day drinking and eating everything i could get my hands on. oh yeah and at some point i had to clean all the mud of my shit.
you make it sound like so much fun. (lol) i'm still cleaning mud from my weekend at sugarloaf, but idon't think i was suffering as much as you.
more unsocial fun to be had up at the spider. went in the other night only to find that my catche of tools i had hidden on the replicator loop was right in the path of the lasest clear cut and although the tree they were behind is still there the tools are now gone. this really sucks for me cuz that was my quick stress relief value, just ducking up to do a little work by myself was a great way to turn the frown around. its bad enough that we are loosing some of the trails but now i have lost the tools to create any new stuff with as well. throw in a crash and a torn sidewall on a tire and just not feeling the love up there lately.
at least you knew where they were (lol). i've got 2 sets of tools lost in whopper, and a stash of nails. check with the tree farmers they seem to be somewhat approachable people.
funny thing how quickly your mood can change eh? this weekend i could have been a contender for the biggest smile award at gore. and yet here i sit days later not even interested in going for a ride social or otherwise. and the funny thing is i just can't seem to be able to put my finger on the problem. as much as the bike can be an emotional savoir at times there are moments when just turning pedals is not enough.
so here we are in the heart of the summer. the heat has been unreal the last little while but hey it aint rain. tried a couple of road rides just to see if i would actually melt. nope didn't melt but sure sweated a lot. hung the road bike back up and took a little ride in the spider just to see were they are at now. got to tell ya that was a buzz kill. to many trees cut down on too many trails.
as always the unofficail anti social blog will deal with riding by ones self at times. the latest trip ended up with me sitting at the top of sugarloaf wanting to give one of the black diamond trails a ride. now i have riden my fair share by my self but when it gets steep and tricky it's a whole new game mentally you just can't shake that dark shadow of doubt from your mind. i mean i banged down the trail ok but you just don't end up letting it hang out like you would with a few friends backing you up, ready to drag your sorry ass out of the bush if so needed. bottom line is when it comes to the big hills being a little social ain't such a bad thing eh.
man some nights are ment to be social that's just the way of it. with the cyclesmith chill ride and the sports wheels ride a bit drink a bit ride going down at the same time at the same place plus a few independants thrown in there for good measure there is no way around it. now don't get me wrong a few words here and there, a rare smile and the passing nod it's all good. but when i see these big groups a standing around waiting to reform and chewing the fat over the latest gossip amongest the pedal people i treasure the freedom that riding by myself gives me at times.
well i have my self set up with a new frame for my trail bike. thanks to my good friend mr scott i now have a jamis dakar to ride and am starting to love it. a new ride as such even if it has some of the same old parts is still i fun time as you discover just what you can and can not do on a new rig. and yes we are now firmly into the night riding with lights season. hope you got the wattage for the coming darkness my friends. word on the street is there is finally some affordable systems out there that are providing both the lumins and the run times. see you in the dark.
so here is the thing. tired of riding the same old trails all the time? so don't get off your ass and out of your routine. seriously i strongly encourage you all to make a point of going out and riding a new trail for a change. failing that go back and revisit one that you have not been on in a while. there is such a mental boost to having new soil under your tires and not knowing whats around the next corner. there are so many great rides just outside the city. combine a new trail with some of the best times of the year and a little hero soil and you got an instant classic in the making. just something to think about folks.
were those your tire tracks i saw?
i am going to say no. having said that i have no idea were you saw any tracks but we were many miles away this weekend. did a double down ride two real neat slightly shorter trails riden on the same day to provide one real good day of riding. and the best thing was that after all the rain we got both trails were totally dry. i repeat totally dry.
hows the new ride treating you? what are you doing with the remains of the satan curz. which one was it, superlight or blur?
it was the heckler model and the remains are sitting in my basement with no real plans other than some expensive art for the wall. on the other hand the dakar is working good, no complaints from me.
well i got my new loopers today so i finally own a tool trail tool again and actually feel like replacing some of the other stuff. but as always there is a catch and today it's my back that has been failing me lately. on the positive side i can still ride my bike as long as i can get my leg over the toptube. speaking of trail work got a chance today to ride a bunch of new stuff up at gore today and that was all cool. lot's of hard work put into the trail and it's only going to continue to get better which is the cool thing. it's damm close to frost time and i am looking forward to what can be the best time of the year. got to wunder what the winter conditions are going to be like this year?
Hoping for cold and no snow!
still being on the mend i went for a short ride the other day and decided to stick my head in the old portland estate trail aka the slickrock race course. while most of the trails are still there not all of them are ride able due to fallen trees or in some cases more severe damage. still i was able to get around a fair amount of the loop in a some what modified fashion. being in there sure stirred up some memory's of my first taste of racing as well as trail building. this place is were i learned how to really ride my mountain bike chasing around some of the faster riders of the day form the once mighty slickrock cycle. seems a shame that these trails lay neglected and unused. while trails may not last for ever it's good to realize the memory's will always have a home.
ahhhhhgggggggg. my back is still being a bitch about things and really putting a limit on what i can do and when. which kind of sucks. no wait honestly it really sucks. this is a great time of the year to ride and do trail work. well just about anytime is a good time for a ride. but as far as trail work is concerned there is no better time, and god knows some of the trails need it. on a positive note the loggers have pulled out of the spider for the time being and some working has been done. as well some more work is planned for the near future. wishing i had a chance to get over and help the promised land project but looks like that will have to wait. my ride in the old slickrock trails is still fresh on my mind and getting some positive response about trying to clean it up has got the gears turning, let's see were it all ends up.
Do you ever go to the doctor for your back? I have some problems flair up about once a year. I go to the doctor, get some Tylenol 3, anti-inflamatories and some muscle relaxants and in 24 - 48 hours I'm usually back to normal. I've messed with the chiropractor a few times with moderate success.
I've found message works best for my back troubles.
who do you message for best results?
hahahahaha!!
wow this is turning into a tough couple of months. the back is on the mend been to the chiro for the first time in my life and that was a bit of a freak at first but that and message are doing good things along with some streches. been able to get out and roll around once in awhile but nothing to hard core. now i get to a point were a feel like riding more and we hit some of the wettest times in recent memory. some of the more popular trails are taking a beating. even with all the work done on the inner peace its still very soft and folks continue to go in and ride. both it and the ribbon of love are going to be requiring a lot of work to get back to their former glory. there are always options to ride when it is wet out but some folks just don't seem to realize the damage they are doing and there seems to be no way to reach them. i guess after years of beating the drum i have gotten to a point where i realize the trails are going to get riden in the wet. we have all done it at one point or an other i guess. not so sure i am trying to make any real cohesive statement here. it's more like a realization of the way things are. perhaps it's time to get back on track and be a little more anti social till the conditions improve.
chiropractor ?, letting someone physically put you back in alignment seems scary to me. check out some yoga sean, letting gravity do the job that a chiropractor does is way better, plus way cheaper, unless you get it with a medical plan. good to hear your on the way to 100%. you seemed sort of fragile the last time we saw you at H.L.
That is the second time in two months that I've made the same embarrassing spelling mistake! D'oh!!!!!
mAssage
so on our ride in the frozen tundra of the once mighty spider lake trails system this morning we ran into the true anti social rider. i hesitate to label him as a bastard simply cuz i don't know the cat at all cuz he never stops to talk and usually avoids all contact. ahhh but what the hell. we'll just have to keep it all in context people. so with tongue in cheek we have this months winner of the anti social bastards riding club. ummm wait i don't know his name garnet perhaps? if you have been in the spider the last few years you may have come across him at some point. you know the guy always by himself head down and pedals churning. no not me the other guy. so if you see him jump out in front of him and block the trail and give him the good news. unfortunitly we don't have a sponsor as of yet here at the ASBRC but perhaps we can share some of the warm fuzzies. don't forget to send in votes for next months rider and remember points will be deducted for taking this serious.
I know the guy you mean. I think I noticed he wore hearing aids. I've tried to speak with him without luck, so I figured he probably can't hear us well enough. Or maybe he just likes to ride alone. At least he's doing it!
it seems that i have been amiss in not posting in a while. but now that the group sites are back to normal i thought it was about time i posted yet agian. well the mighty darkside has lost their only bike shop this side of the twin spans which sucks in more ways than one. not only are we darksiders forced to travel for even the smallest of items now but we also lose out on a social setting as well. there is a lot d town has to offer a cyclist both road and mountian and it is a void that needs to be filled sooner rather than later. seeing a new bike shop throw its doors open would be an exiting piece of news at this point in time. speaking of time the winter blahs have set in and we are all held hostage to getting out for a ride by the weather. hoping that the coming spring will bring a fresh outlook on things and some of the d town damage can be repaired both on and of the trails.

hey just to remind all you anti social types that just cause the sun is finally out and it is a beautiful day not to let your guard down and get all warm and fuzzy.
